West Ham v West Brom

Tuesday, Jan 02 – 19:45

West Ham were held to a 3-3 draw in their match with Bournemouth on Boxing Day, with Callum Wilson scoring a 93rd minute equaliser to deny the Hammers all three points. Winger Marko Arnautovic scored a brace during the game, and has continued to impress under David Moyes over the last few weeks. West Ham still have plenty of work to do to escape relegation this season, but with Newcastle, Southampton, and indeed West Brom all struggling for results, there could be light at the end of the tunnel for the East London club.

West Brom’s problems in front of goal have continued in recent weeks, and Alan Pardew may have some tough decisions ahead of him in the upcoming transfer window. The big news from the Hawthorns is that centre-back Jonny Evans may depart the club in January, with reports suggesting that the Northern Irishman is set for a big-money move to Manchester City. The Baggies collected just three points in December, leaving them 19th in the Premier League table, with Swansea City two points below.

What the stats tell us:

  • West Ham have not lost a home game against West Brom over their last eight Premier League matches (W2 D6) – they have drawn each of the last four games.
  • The last time that the Baggies kept a clean sheet in both of their league fixtures against West Ham was back in the 1976/77 season.
  • Alan Pardew has only lost one of his five league matches away at West Ham since leaving the club in December 2006 (W2 D2 L1).
  • Six of West Brom 15 points this season have come away from home – they have kept clean sheets in two of their six away matches in 2017/18.

West Ham are scoring plenty of goals at the moment; however, their defensive displays have been inconsistent. They were unlucky to concede a late goal against Bournemouth last week, but keep making hard work for themselves by allowing their opponents to much space in the box. West Brom will get a few chances in this match – whether they can put them away is another question. This should be a close match, but ultimately the Hammers will take the three points.
