Juan Martin del Potro is through to the quarter-finals of this year’s US Open tournament, after beating Dominic Thiem over five sets. The Argentinian is hoping for a repeat of his 2009 Open victory, but will first have to overcome Roger Federer in the next round of the tournament.
There have been plenty of thrilling matches over the course of this year’s US Open, but yesterday’s round-of-16 bout between del Potro and Thiem was truly one of the best. Del Potro looked down and out after losing the first two sets and trailing 5-2 in the fourth; however, the 24th seed buckled down to save two match points, before eventually winning the match 1-6 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-1) 6-4.
The Argentinian is now poised for a rematch with fellow 2009 finalist Roger Federer.
Del Potro said of his victory: “Oh my God,” “I don’t know what can I say after this big battle. I was sick the last two days. I came here trying to play as well as I can.
“When I saw all of this crowd cheering for me, my illness cleared up. I was trying to feel better every game. I fight like this because of you guys.”
