Maria Sharapova has been eliminated from this year’s US Open following at 5-7 6-4 6-2 loss to Anastasija Sevastova. It was the Russian’s first tournament following a 15-month doping suspension, and Sharapova described her US Open journey as ‘a great ride’.
It’s never easy to find top form after an extended period away from any sport, and for this reason Maria Sharapova exceeded many people’s expectations over the last week. After a good showing in the first three rounds (including a victory over World No. 2 Simona Halep), fans began to believe that the 30-year-old may claim her first Grand Slam title since 2014.
Sharapova said of her US Open performance: “It’s been a really great ride in the last week. It’s great to get that major out of the way. It was an incredible opportunity. I’m very thankful for the opportunity. I did my best. I can be proud of that.
“I think there are a lot of positives. Playing four matches, playing in front of a big crowd and fans. Just competing, being in that competitive environment. That’s what I missed.
“You can’t replicate that anywhere, especially at a Grand Slam. Monday night was a special night for me. I will always remember it.”
